What is the new Pumpwatch scheme and what does it mean for motorists?

24th May 2024

The fluctuation in petrol prices between different petrol stations makes filling up at the forecourt a lottery. How do you know if you are getting the best deal at the pump? The UK government has proposed a new initiative to help drivers find the cheapest fuel. Merityre’s guide covers everything you need to know about the Pumpwatch scheme.

What is the Pumpwatch scheme?

Pumpwatch is a scheme drawn up by the UK government that will be launched in late 2024. Fuel stations across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland must legally share fuel prices with a government-appointed organisation. This forms part of the government’s plans to tackle overcharging with fuel retailers while encouraging motorists to find the best fuel deals.

How does the Pumpwatch scheme work?

The idea behind the Pumpwatch scheme is for fuel retailers to share petrol and diesel prices within 30 minutes of making price changes. Once the Pumpwatch data is publicly available, tech companies will develop new technologies to help motorists get good fuel deals. This could be via mobile apps, in-car devices, or online mapping platforms.

Which retailers have signed up for the Pumpwatch scheme?

Fourteen retailers have signed up for the UK government’s Pumpwatch scheme run by the Competition and Markets Authority, which includes:

  • Applegreen UK
  • Ascona Group
  • ASDA
  • BP
  • Esso Tesco Alliance
  • JET Retail UK
  • Morrisons
  • Moto
  • Motor Fuel Group
  • Rontec
  • Sainsbury’s
  • SGN
  • Shell
  • Tesco

How much money will the Pumpwatch scheme save for motorists?

According to a report from the CMA, it is estimated that Pumpwatch will save up to £4.50 on a petrol tank filling within a five-minute drive of your local fuel station.
