What are used tyres?

Used tyres (also known as part-worn or second-hand tyres) are tyres that have been previously used on another vehicle. Most used tyres come with about 50% of the original tread depth, they may have clocked up several thousand miles before being re-sold.

Are used tyres safe?

We advise against buying part-worn tyres when replacing your old tyres. If you are unable to afford new tyres and need an urgent replacement, we recommend that you at least ensure that the pair you are buying are in good condition and will keep you safe on the road. 

There are stringent criteria that sellers must meet for part-worn tyres under the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994. These regulations for selling tyres in the UK form part of the Consumer Protection Act 1987. Before a used tyre can be sold, the seller must ensure:

• The tyres must pass an inflation test before being sold.
• The tyres are permanently labelled ‘PART-WORN’ in uppercase letters, at least 4mm high on the tyre.
• There are no internal or external lumps, bumps, bulges or tears in the tyres.
• The original grooves are visible and have a minimum 2mm tread depth around the tyre’s circumference.
• No ply or cord in the tyres are exposed externally or internally.

What are new tyres?

New tyres are car tyres that have been manufactured from the factory. All new tyres have a maximum tread depth of 8 to 9mm and require a breaking-in period to ensure the rubber performs at its best.

Will I save money buying used tyres over new tyres?

While you will save money in the short term by buying second-hand tyres, it can cost you more in the long run. • The tyres are five years old or more.
• You hear strange noises coming from your tyres.
• Your car vibrates while driving.
• The tyre tread depth reaches the minimum legal limit of under 3mm for each tyre, where your vehicle’s tyre grip and handling are affected.
