Tyre Safety Month is a campaign run by TyreSafe which promotes tyre safety awareness. Merityre Specialists believe that tyre safety should be a priority for all motorists, which is why we offer FREE tyre checks all year.
In their survey, TyreSafe found that more than one in four motorists replace their tyres when they are already illegal. This means that there could be over 10 million illegal and dangerous tyres currently on the road*.
Tyres are illegal when tread depth is lower than 1.6mm and if you are found to be driving on tyres that are under this level, you could face a £2,500 fine and three penalty points per each illegal tyre. Tyres that are damaged could also be illegal, so if you do find any signs such as lumps, cuts or tears, you should have them checked over by a tyre specialist at your local Merityre Centre.
As well as being illegal, tyres with low levels of tread are unsafe. Here at Merityre Specialists, we would recommend replacing your tyres once the tread measures below 3mm. At this level, your gripping abilities, braking distances and wet weather performance are drastically affected.
Over the last five years, there have been 5,677 casualties resulting from tyre-related incidents, and from this figure 989 people were seriously injured or killed*. To help keep yourself, your passengers and other road users safe, you should check your tyre pressures, tyre tread and look for tyre damage every three weeks.
This Tyre Safety Month, book a FREE tyre check at your local Merityre Specialists. Our trained tyre specialists will check that your tyre tread is above the legal limit, there are no signs of damage which could lead to accidents and that your tyres are filled to the correct pressures.
