Car exhaust systems: Explained

22nd July 2024

The exhaust system is an essential component of your vehicle as it reduces harmful emissions from the engine while improving fuel consumption. But how does it work and are there different types of exhaust systems available? Merityre’s informative guide explores how your car’s exhaust works and when to replace it.

What components make up a car exhaust system?

Your car’s exhaust system is typically made up of the following components:

  • Muffler
  • Exhaust manifold
  • Downpipe
  • A diesel/petrol particulate filter
  • The tailpipe and back box.
  • Exhaust hangers

Are there different types of car exhaust systems?

Exhaust systems come in various types and styles. Whether you plan to replace or upgrade your car exhaust system, there are four main types of exhaust systems:

  • Stock exhaust – This is the original exhaust fitted from the factory. Most stock exhausts balance noise reduction, performance and efficiency.
  • Axle-back exhaust – This system replaces the muffler and the pipe running from the muffler to the rear of your car.
  • Turbo-back exhaust - This exhaust system replaces the existing stock system from the turbo all the way to the tailpipe. It provides an excellent balance of sound and performance.
  • Cat-back exhaust – Most cat-back exhaust systems replace the section of the exhaust pipe which runs from the catalytic converter to the muffler. It offers improved performance and sound from the factory stock exhaust. It’s a popular choice if you want a deeper enhanced sound without sacrificing performance.

When should I replace my car’s exhaust?

Over time, your car’s exhaust system may become faulty or damaged. You should book an exhaust check if you notice the following signs:

  • Rumbling, popping or hissing sounds from the exhaust silencer.
  • The engine struggles to release the exhaust gases, thus leading to increased fuel consumption.
  • There is discolouration and rust patches on the exhaust.
  • Loose components hanging out of the exhaust system, such as the pipes or exhaust manifold.

Should I drive my car without an exhaust?

While it is possible to drive your vehicle without an exhaust, it is illegal to do. Exhaust fumes are harmful, not only to you but to the environment and to other road users as well. If your exhaust is damaged or missing you will be breaking the law by exceeding exhaust emissions and a damaged or missing exhaust will also affect fuel economy and engine power.

Do electric cars have an exhaust?

As EVs run on battery power, they don’t require an exhaust system, compared to a traditional internal combustion engine car. This means an electric vehicle emits zero emissions from the tailpipe.
